Reflecting on the pitches today

Hello everybody,

Once you have delivered your pitch today, please reflect on your own performance in the comments section. Please use the following prompts to do so:

  1. State what your research topic was
  2. What you thought you did well
  3. How you think you handled the questions
  4. What you thought of the pitching session - was it more difficult / not as bad as you thought it was going to be?
  5. Anything else you think would be of assistance to your reflections
IF you have been unable to post on this post within class time after your pitch, please do your best to do so when you get home, so it is fresh in your mind.

All the best and well done to everybody (in advance) who delivered a pitch today.

Mark

  1. my research topic was spiking in nightclubs and bars. i thought i structured my pitch well and spoke confidently but because i was reading off my phone and had practised presenting by reading off my laptop i found that a slight challenge. i think i handled the questions well but could have cited the source of my statistics for when people asked more abut them. despite going first i didn't find it as scary as i thought it was going to be as i had a good audience.

I felt like a projected my voice well and covered a wide variety of topics clearly

I feel I handled the questions well however perhaps spoke too fast at times

  3. my research topic was the texas abortion law, sb8

i think i got my point across quite effectively and provided good information

i think i handled the questions quite well, it is a topic i'm passionate about so i have a lot of information in my head haha

i always get super anxious before a presentation (even though i know i'm a decent public speaker) because i tend to speed up and sometimes stumble over my words. i got my main points across but i forgot some secondary information ://

  4. My research topic was the fall of civilisation.

I think I conveyed the purpose and and audience effectively.

I think I handled the questions better than the presentation because I prefer to have conversations than to preach to people.

I don't have any fear of public speaking and am not easily shaken when in front of an audience.

I'm a bit annoyed that I ran over. I often tend to over indulge in my points and go off on unnecessary tangents.

  5. My research topic was world war 3, i think that my pitch was pretty captivating. i think i handled the questions well, although it was difficult to put my thoughts into words. it wasn't as nerve racking as i thought it would be ;)

  6. My research topic was Rape culture in football. I feel that my pitch went relatively well, as despite running over time, the remaining topics I had to cover were all done so in the questions. Murray

  7. My Idea was 'How social media can effect someones mental health' I believe my pitch went well although it was shorter. I believe I handled the questions well and gave decent responses. To improve I think I could put more research in my pitch which would give people a better idea of what my pitch was about.

  8. My research topic was VAR in football and the controversy of it. I feel my pitch went well and I covered all the topics and follow the structure. I think I handled the questions well but need to further my knowledge on the issues I may face. I enjoyed the pitch as it is on a topic I enjoy learning and talking about so wasn't very nervous. thank you.

  9. My topic was the impact of covid 19 on the music Industry
I feel a was confident with the speaking however could have stuck to more of a script. I could have also tried to think of more problems that could arrive to my topic. However I felt the questions asked helped me and made me think of more content to put in my blog

  10. Hi Mark,

I really enjoyed seeing everyones passion today for their topics. My topic is titled "Sex-Ed Uncensored" which discusses topics that aren't highlighted in the sex education curriculum in the UK that I think are very important to the exploration and maturity of young people. I think my topic was well researched and was expressed comprehensively. I would have liked to have had my notes printed as opposed to read of my phone, and I would have liked to have kept a better eye on my timer so that I didn't run over. I think I handled the questions well by giving detailed answers and also taking on board the ideas given. The pitch was enjoyable as I feel very comfortable in this class, I just wish Luna had picked out my name sooner a I got a bit anxious awaiting my turn. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to my topic and in particular designing a logo and styling the blog!

  11. My pitch was about should drugs be legalised? i felt i was very nervous when speaking and i didn't stick to my script. I think the nerves got to me and i started to get muddled up in what i was saying. I think i answered the questions made me say my points better. I think the questions also made me think about the different roots i could take with the decriminalisation and legalisation.

  12. I will be creating a podcast on the impact social media, specifically Instagram, has on mental health.

I believe I covered all of the requested information and presented it in a structured and professional way.

I also believe I answered the questions fully and took on useful information from the questions, such as Jack’s suggestion to interview the actual influencers.

It was not as bad as I thought it’d be! I had been very nervous initially, but once I started talking, I was fine as I am passionate about my topic.

  13. My research topic is NFTs. I think I did well on getting all the information I needed to into my pitch, however I feel I could have been a bit more concise when answering questions. I think the pitch session went well however not knowing when I would be pitching within the class was a bit stressful.

  14. My pitch was about the effect of social media on attention spans.I thought i had a good structure and handled the questions well however i will do more research. I hope to be less nervous next time and as i was last to pitch i felt i got more anxious as the time went on. I look forward to learn more about the topic.

  15. Some fantastic comments in here, really well done. This was a very insightful session and I hope that you all learned something about yourselves, topic choices and how your blog and podcast might turn out. As we know, research and communication are both dynamic, so keep a note of what you pitched today as it will come in very handy when you come to reflect on your experiences towards the end of this module. I was very proud of you all today, so well done again. Mark

  17. my topic was mis-information ("fake news")
i thought i covered nearly all the bases to a decent extent
    Handled them ok
not as bad as i thought it would be but still difficult
i think i let nervousness get the best of me!!

    1. Hi Lauren, great feedback. When I run my session on effective presentation delivery, one of the things I’ll address is nerves. Although I prefer to refer to them as “using a competitive edge”. All the best, see you tomorrow. Mark

  18. My topic was creating the student fashion guide.
I feel like the feedback I got in class helped me understand how I can structure my blog and ideas in a more clearer way. I also felt like I did talk a bit too fast since I was a bit nervous but overall i think the pitch went well.

    1. Thanks Daniah, you did well though and crucially, it was accepted! The pitches will be helpful for practise speaking when the assessed talks happen early May. See you online at 2.30. All the best, Mark

  19. my topic was the gym and how it effects mental health.
i think i did well with knowing and relating to my topic and also feel like i explained parts of it well however still have work to do. i think the questions were very helpful as they got me thinking what else i want to add to my blog. i was nervous to present but glad i did and enjoyed hearing everyones topics.

  21. My topic is pronouns & gender. I though my idea was relevant.
I think I handled the questions with the main points represent from the pitch.
I found it very nerve racking I really don’t like talking in public so I messed my words up and didn’t get out all that I wanted to.

  22. My topic was how religious and spiritual practices can improve your wellbeing, whether you're a believer or not. I think I did well during the question and answer portion of the pitch by addressing each point fo the question and relating it to personal experience. The pitch went by much faster than it had during my practice, I was able to cut out a small section to make sure I didn't run over time which tells me I should have practiced aloud more.

  23. My topic is an exploration of the hospitality industry.
I feel I did the best I could considering the circumstances as I would have felt more comfortable presenting in person, I enjoy reacting to people as they reaction to me. I'm confident in pitching in this way so I was more nervous about that reaction to my actual topic specially as I had changed my subject last minuet.
I also really enjoyed heard about everyone else's topic choses I feel like its such an insight into everyones personal interests.

  24. My Topic I felt was very simple however has a large amount of depth and variation to it and Im hoping to help people come into the world of media analysis and making it interesting to them but also to appease people who do enjoy it. I felt I spoke really fast in my pitch which is a bad habit of mine however im glad I was able to do a topic I have genuine passion for it - Aidan

  25. My topic was how music can help connect people and express yourself. I think i did well answering questions and got my point across to my audience. I do think i stuttered a bit too much though and was a bit nervous but think i found my flow later on.

  26. My topic was managing a job while studying. In my opinion I did decently. Could have been better, but I was surprised at my time. I thought I would not speak enough to make a good time and I ended speaking too much! Kind of ironic. I think I could have handled the questions better but I am always awkward in the Q&A's. I hope I can get better, even though this was not a marked pitch, I always end up treating it all the same as if it was, haha! Public speaking has always been something I am not confident at and there is a lot I am still to learn. Overall, I give my pitch an OK. I also enjoyed listening to the questions that others had about everyone else's pitches. Kind of sad I missed all the other pitches the other week. But oh well! Thank you!

  27. Thank you all for your comments. I am still missing some though, so please attend to that as a matter of priority before next week's session. It is important...

  28. My pitch was about the representation of ethnic minorities in creative industries (with a focus on the fashion industry)
I think I did fairly well choosing & presenting my idea of a blog and podcast surrounding this topic however there was so much more I could have said as it is a topic that definitely needs to be addressed. The questions helped me take note of all that I had not covered in the presentation which was helpful as I now know what to include for next time. I really enjoyed hearing everyones pitches as there were some really interesting topics and everyone did so well

    1. Hi Belo, and welcome to the blog. Some great observations there and I’m glad you found the session of assistance. I agree, the questions were designed to help focus all presenters and I’m glad to read that this part of the pitch was of assistance. You have chosen a really good topic and I’m interested to see how it pans out for you. All the best, Mark

  29. My Pitch was about how social media promotes eating disorders.
I think my pitch went ok and I feel I answered the questions well and did a decent amount of research on the topic.
However, I do feel that I could've spoken a lot slower and added more content to make the pitch longer.

  30. My Pitch was about Sports media/Sports Journalism. I feel my pitch went well as my timing was just bellow the 3 minute mark and I was familiar with my topic so I didn't need my Q cards. For the assessment I look to speak with more clarity as sometimes I sound monotone without meaning to. I feel answered questions appropriately and look forward to showcasing my improvments for next time.
